Susan Folding Furniture For Small Spaces

Susan asks…

Can you use just a memory foam to sleep on (no bed, no mattress) for a day or two?

Will it be painful or comfortable?

I will be living in a small apartment. I need something in which my guests (say, a couple) can sleep on for a day or two. I need to be able to fold it to a very small size and put away. I do not have a lot of storage space so the folding beds are not an option. I might go for a futon but would prefer not buying a large furniture. Any suggestions?

admin answers:

Two inches is pretty much the thickness for a mattress topper made of memory foam. That will not get the job done. You will bottom out and feel the floor.

Charles Folding Furniture For Small Spaces

Charles asks…

My parents are coming to visit and want to stay in my studio apartment – please help!

My parents are coming to visit next weekend, They forgot to make hotel reservations and said today that they want to just stay with me instead of paying a lot for a hotel short-notice.

I live in a studio apartment: one room for kitchen, sofa, bed, and everything else. The sofa folds out into a small bed, which is where I would sleep while they’re in my bed. When my boyfriend stays over, we are very tight already – and that’s just ONE extra person, not two, plus all their luggage, etc. On top of this, my dad has mobility problems, so the tight spaces between my furniture will be like an obstacle course for him.

When my boyfriend is here, we sleep in my bed and don’t unfold the sofa so there is more floor space. I also don’t mind changing my clothes in front of him or showering with the door open – but I wouldn’t do this with my parents in my tiny apartment.

Not to mention the fact that I live alone for a REASON: I need my personal time and space. I am worried about not getting a break from other people all over me and in my stuff.

Please advise me about how to deal with this situation. Do I have any other options here? How can I not go crazy with no personal space? Any little tricks about having houseguests in such a TINY apartment?

admin answers:

You only have 2 options in this situation:

1) You can just suck it up. Prepare yourself mentally for how frustrating the situation will be. Remind yourself that it’s only for a short visit and that, in reality, there will come a day when your parents are dead & gone and you’ll long to have them close. People often forget the larger picture as they go through life & let little things bother them. I’d definitely call this a minor & temporary inconvenience in the grand scheme of life.

2) You could go ahead & reserve them a hotel room close to your apartment and pay for it yourself. If money is the issue, then maybe you can “treat” them to the hotel stay. If you pitch it the right way, you’ll come off as the greatest daughter ever and they’ll appreciate your kindness. It doesn’t have to come off as charity. Parents spend so much money on their kids. This is just one small way you can appear to be a grateful child.

How to make the bed during the summer months with 2 comforters.?

I have a very small bedroom and I do not know where to place the comforter when I go to sleep. I end up putting it on the floor by the end of the bed but I do not want it to get dirty. I do not have space in the room for a chair or any additional furniture. Is there a way to fold it to make it easier to make the bed…etc…

admin answers:

Well there is a thing at Wal- Mart a bag using a vacuum cleaner to suck all the air out. It flattens it so you could store it under your bed. Or use it as a pillow on you couch fold and roll it up. Or roll it and use it a a body pillow.

If you have a attic put in a big garbage bag and store it there. You could also as someone if you could store it in their attic. Or bring it over here I will store it for you I have plenty of room…LOL JK

Furniture Rearranging advice.?

My room is small, and shaped exactly like a square. It’s about 10 feet by 10 feet from wall to wall. I have 4 main pieces of furniture in my room. One piece of the furniture, (my nightstand) is optional. The T.V. stand CANNOT be moved. My Desk is in my closet. I need all the space used to it’s maximum. I want to reduce clutter as well. My bed is a futon. So extra room is needed for when I fold it down to sleep. Click the link for an image of my room.

admin answers:

Have you tried moving the bed/futon to the other wall – so when you are lying on it you see the tv over your feet? That may give more room in the middle of the room.

Reduce clutter with bookshelves, shelves on the wall, containers to put stuff in, cork or other boards on the wall you can post things on, hooks on the wall to hang hats, jewelry, etc. Try the Container Store.
